Our HCA Dream Team— The Leaders of the Flock!

Coach Kelli Hession, Owner
My main objective in deciding to open up Hession Cheer Academy was to give the children in our community a safe, positive place to grow and have fun! My dream is to continue to offer cheer, tumbling, strength training, and more to allow even more children in our community to have a safe place to call their second home!
Besides cheer, my biggest love is my nieces and nephews, Henlee, Rhett, Sadie, Rayleigh, Harrison, and Ripp! You are a huge part of my “why” I opened HCA! I pray that HCA is always a second home to you where you can come find your Aunt KK anytime!
I cheered at Brownsburg High School and then continued my cheerleading career on Purdue University’s Co-Ed team, which was one of the hardest goals I ever made— and met!— in my life!
Through cheerleading, I learned the importance of goal setting, discipline, time-management, and leadership. These are all qualities I hope to instill in the athletes that enter our gym!
This is my 10th year coaching competitive cheer— and third year as owner! Still seems so crazy to say that!
I have coached competitive cheer teams that have placed as high as 3rd place and 5th place at D2 Summit! I cannot wait for our athletes at HCA to place this well and higher in the near future!!
To me, the most rewarding part of coaching is seeing the smiles on my athlete’s face when they accomplish a new skill, hit a new stunt, or hit zero at a competition! I love seeing the new friendships made at the gym and the friends that turn into family!
If you know me, you know one how much I love “Kelli-Clean!”
I give all the glory to God and praise Jesus for allowing me to pursue this amazing dream and coach athletes to reach their potential both on and off the mat!
A huge thank you to Lauren Means, my right hand woman, who has been here with me through the very beginning! Thank you for your wisdom and always keeping me laughing! Next, I would like to thank my amazing sister-in-laws, Amy and Shelby, who are not only my sisters but my best friends, that were the second two that hopped on this crazy HCA train and never looked back! They are the first two to step in and help and make sure HCA is always taken care of! To my Mom and Dad, thank you for instilling in me the values that lead me to open HCA and for always being my number one cheerleader! Thank you to my brothers Michael and Daniel for always being here when I need help with “just a little thing” and then taking care of lots of “bigger things!” Thank you to my incredible huge family: Aunt Kater, Anthony, Uncle Harry, Aunt Bernie, Aunt Marijane, Uncle Robert, Aunt Kelli, Aunt Debbie, Uncle Matt, Aunt Kathy, Kari, Sarah… and I’m sure countless more that I’m going to feel guilty for not including…for helping with the opening and expansion of HCA! Last, I want to thank my incredible staff, the ladies and young men you see on this page, who pour their love into the athletes that enter HCA each and every day! I couldn’t be more lucky to have each and every one of you to work beside everyday!

Coach Lauren Means, Head Tumbling Coach
Hey there!
My name is Lauren Means and the lead tumbling coach here at HCA. I have 21 years of experience coaching gymnastics and cheerleading of all ages. I grew up here on the westside of Indianapolis attending Ben Davis High School where I was a competitive cheerleader. I was a member of the Cheerleading State Champion team 1999 and 2000 and I competed at UCA Nationals 2000 and 2002. I reside in Avon with my two daughters, McKenna (18) Madilyn (15) and my fiancé, Nathan.
I started coaching 2001, my senior year of high school. I had all the required tumbling skills for my cheer squad so I started spotting my teammates during our tumbling classes and practices. The owner/my coach offered me a coaching position. While attending IUPUI and working different jobs I knew I wanted to continue to coach.
In 2002, myself and three other cheer mentors started an all-star cheer program and that is where I met Miss Kelli. She was a part of our first cheer team where we competed at UCA Nationals in Orlando, Florida. In 2008, I decided to step away from the all star cheer world and focus more on the competitive side of gymnastics, since that was the path my daughters would be taking. From 2008-2018, I coached our pre team groups, Level 2 gymnastics team, coached all cheer tumbling classes and managed the recreational gymnastics program.
In 2018, I had to make the difficult decision to move my two daughters from our home gym to a more advanced training gym. From 2018-2022, I worked at JPAC (Jaycie Phelps Athletic Center) as director of the preschool gymnastics program and coached pre-team groups as well as recreational gymnastics and cheer tumbling classes.
I want to thank my parents and grandparents for always supporting me in my cheerleading and gymnastics journey.
I also want to give a BIG thanks to Vera Ortman, Darbie Ortman, Shelley Syrko, Danielle Orner-Whitlock and Katie De La Cruz for fueling my love for gymnastics and cheerleading. The life lessons as an athlete, coach and now a parent have been influenced by these individuals and the experiences I’ve had in the gymnastics and cheerleading world.
If you’re looking for a passionate, enthusiastic, and positive culture you’ve come to the right place!!
